Name a folk dance ensemble that has performed in places ranging from Romania to Australia, from Israel to China. Yes, it might be renowned Moiseyev, or it could be ALLNATIONS Dance Company, an American-based multi-national dance ensemble which has conquered audiences in many lands.
It all began in 1963, when dancers living at International House in New York City prepared entertainment to attract more participants to the folk dance sessions that were offered for residents. Within a year these informal performances became a regular feature of International House, and requests for outside performances began to arrive. Thanks to the wealth of talents available at International House, the quality of the company began at a high level and has continued upward from there. The troupe soon became a fully professional company drawing upon the many different nations represented at the House.
From the start the ALLNATIONS presentation, “Joy in Every Land” strove to provide a bond of understanding between the performers and the audiences. The program offered a rage of dances and folklore performed by artists trained in the authentic styles of their respective countries. Today the essenti8al format still remains the same, so that a Philippine Muslim dance may be followed by Russian Polka or a Mexican Zapateado followed by Chinese Ribbon dance. The dances are skillfully woven together to create a fascinating trip around the world throught music and dance.
For the first years of its existence, ALLNATIONS performed largely in the New York area but in 1967, with funds donated by several corporations, a visit to Puerto Rico was arranged. A second visit was made in 1969, as were appearances inother parts of the Caribbean. Success followed success and return engagements became routine. Today the company maintains a full schedule of performances from September to June, presenting education programs for schools and universities as well as full evening performances. ALLNATIONS has toured much of the world, having appeared in 50 countries on six continents.
Membership in the ALLNATIONS Dance Company was originally restricted to resident artists at International House. Today, in order to maintain their high standards, the company has opened its auditions to dancers from all over the world. However, the Company has not altered its dedication to friendship and understanding among peoples, a spirit it easily and warmly conveys in its presentations.
